They say it's going to break! Can composite engineering save my supercar?
3 design features that can increase the strength of a composite structure are investigated. We build several test samples and do some destructive testing to see what will give the Arete supercar's monocoque chassis the best chance to survive the rigors of the road.

    Gotcha. So it’s not actually a prototype but rather a personal project to build a one of a kind car where you built everything that parts replication is not per se a requirement. Best of luck with your artwork.

    If this is a concept prototype, why not modify a viper, older corvette or even a karmann Gia to attract investors to then build a real super car to prototype as a conversion, kit or production design? Just an after thought, buy a cobra kit chassis only then mock up your body design with carbon fiber rather then glass.

I'll take your point in great regard when it will come to it: spending 3K in CF and a lot of work or gain the same performances giving those 3 grands to my mechanic and sit dinking beer at the TV? very nice. I'm curious. Is there a reason you didn't use a gelcoat as a base to make the final pieces? I've seen it done a lot and i'm curious on your reasoning. For your mold release did you use wax and pva?

    • @BuilderCreator
      @BuilderCreator 2 дні тому

      Wax and PVA for mold release. Gel coats are usually added when a part is going to be used straight out of the mold. I will be doing extensive part bonding and finishing for paint. Gel coats would just be something that gets sanded down and extra weight.

      The epoxy system I am using does not require any post cure. (unless the parts are going into use immediately; and with a few years into the project, they are well aged. Ha!

    I enjoyed your video and I really appreciate all the effort that you’ve put into this vehicle. If I were to provide a peer review, I would say the following: 1. Your sketches didn’t show any triangulation between the beams that you’re running in the vehicle. Nodes and trusses greatly improve the stiffness of any structure, that’s why space frames and bridges and even monocoque chassis’s are built this way. 2. Instead of foamcore, I would use nomex honeycomb 3. Because the shape of a vehicle is an extremely complex structure, you can create a finite element model of your vehicle and test it in any way you’d like using finite element simulation. Chassis design is an iterative process. 4. Generally speaking, the tensile strength of any material in any shape is available for free online, there’s no need to do any testing. The shapes that are generally used usually form closed structures, and the proven methods are usually body panels over DOM tubing, but you can certainly build a space frame from carbon fiber as well or glass fiber. 5. Because your frame uses complex shapes and directional composites, the analysis becomes much more complicated but it’s hard to know for sure even after all the testing you performed. I would highly recommend creating a finite element model of your chassis and having someone with LS-DYNA or Ansys run the analysis for you. Good luck!

    How did you calculate the total weight for the cement blocks (not cinder BTW), since a significant portion of the load between the strap and the outrigger support? You can choose either the strap or the out rigger as your fulcrum point, and measure the distance from each block center to the fulcrum in a ratio with the distance between both supports (strap & outrigger). If the outrigger is 20 times the distance from the strap than the load center, you must reduce your effective load to 95% of the actual weight. 10 to 1 would knock you down to 90%. Your rig looks like roughly a 5 to 1 distribution depending on what blocks are placed where...

      I could reduce the number of engineering constants if you would submit $5000 dollars for a nice little used Zwick composite testing rig (plus $2000 for shipping from Slovenia). It was all for a point of discussion, not submission for a military contract. Straining at nats. P.S. I live within a hundred miles of 5 large inactive volcanoes and several thousand extinct cinder cones. They do indeed still make cinder blocks here in the Pacific Northwest.

    Use a generator to power an electric outboard motor for propulsion in the water. You’ll probably want a generator anyways and an electric motor can be stored in any configuration. You won’t get any higher than ten knots unless you plan on over a thousand horsepower anyways. Use a high torque electric motor with a large propeller in order to get solid thrust. You will also have maneuverability issues in the water so be sure to add a bow thruster to turn that thing. I’ve worked on mega yachts for many years and have designed electrical systems for them. Electric propulsion is the way to go in this case. I know I’m very late into the game but just my two cents. Good luck with your build! Looking forward to your build

    excellent explanation sir, your a pretty exceptional engineer as it goes - you have to love the haters, haha and you handle them so well, personally i think they need the shorts taking down and given a good slapping since they behave like little kids from the point of you building a car, super or otherwise, the wheels base is perfectly short, we are not talking about the same loads that might be exceeded perhaps in a plane or a bridge, so the car and its size are well within tolerances in comparison to using fibre glass, carbon fibre and kevlar which in its self can be considered an overkill in the automotive industry, but safety apparently is looked on as a necessity these days and so cannot be avoided - carbon fibre shatters like crazy in F1 car racing, because it is designed this way to absorb as much impact as possible prior to glass fibre and carbon being used, paper and cardboard was used in similar ways, soaked in resin, built up in layers to create very hard impact surfaces, disposable fuel tanks were made in a similar fashion throughout the 50's and 60's - for the haters, consider a simple toilet roll tube of cardboard, stand on end an place a simple house brick on top, will it hold and ask yourself why, how does this work?

    • @BuilderCreator
